Internship or Master Thesis: Access Management on Linked Data (a)
60-100%
Bern

What you're going to do
Are you passionate about data engineering, access management, and digital transformation in the public sector? Are you looking for an internship or master’s thesis project? Then this might be your opportunity!
Linked Data technologies are widely used within the federal government for data sharing. Data sets are generally available publicly. With this project, our goal is to investigate and elaborate a concept of access management on top of Linked Data to be able to share restricted data.
Linked Data technologies with RDF and SPARQL are increasingly adopted for decentralized data sharing applications, especially within public sector organizations at national and European levels. Platforms such as LINDAS (https://lindas.admin.ch/) demonstrate the power of open data, making vast information resources publicly available. However, as data sharing expands, robust access control mechanisms become essential to balance openness with privacy and security.
The project will explore and design novel scientific approaches for implementing access control in Linked Data environments. Key research topics include:
- Access restriction by design: Investigating and prototyping methods to enforce access controls directly within Linked Data architectures using SPARQL API, ensuring protection of sensitive data without compromising interoperability or usability
- Product-based access models: Developing and evaluating models for access management, enabling fine-grained, scalable authorization processes on the level of a data product or attribute-based; leveraging experience from closed data spaces and data mesh principles
- Balancing openness and privacy: Analyzing strategies for maintaining the openness of platforms like LINDAS while implementing effective restrictions for sensitive datasets
What we're looking for
- Enrollment in a master's program (university of applied sciences / university / ETH) in computer science, information systems, or similar
- Strong interest in data technologies and security, experience with IAM, Linked Data, or data engineering is a plus
- Fluency in German and English
